How to improve your indoor air quality in your house

Maintaining high-quality indoor air is essential, considering you spend more than 80% of your time indoors. Unfortunately, air pollution in homes is a real thing. Homeowners should strive to improve indoor air quality to minimize disease outbreaks in their households. Poor indoor air quality is responsible for mold infestation and the accumulation of allergens and pollutants. You will know that the air in your home is compromised when sensitive members of your family keep having allergic reactions or flu-like symptoms. Rather than wait for it to get here, try out a few hacks that could improve the air quality in your home. Surprisingly, the simple things you do regularly make a big difference.

Change filters

Set reminders if you have to but never skip filter changes. With the AC working all year round, it’s only reasonable that you keep the filters clean. As air passes through these filters, they filter out pollutants and debris. If left unattended, clogged filters may force some of these particles into your house, causing pollution and deterioration of air quality. Regular filter changes are the only way out of such avoidable pollution. Do not wait for the regular professional tune-up session to clean or replace filters.

Clean Air Ducts

Air ducts are responsible for distributing cold and warm air throughout the house. While they do this efficiently, they are prone to dust and dander accumulation over time. Proper maintenance of these ducts ensures that air ducts are always clean, thus minimizing the chances of air pollution. Hire professional air duct cleaners to clean the ducts once in a while, especially if there is mold infestation. You need to disinfect these airways and promote the circulation of clean air.

Utilize Cooking Vents

Much of the indoor air pollution comes from your kitchen. Gas stoves tend to release many harmful gases, including carbon monoxide. Unfortunately, these gases find a way of circulating throughout the house. To minimize this, use kitchen vents to suck out the harmful gases. Alternatively, open windows whenever you are cooking. Kitchen venting should be a priority for all homeowners keen on maintaining excellent air quality.

Clean Carpets and Rugs

Carpets and rugs are often used to prevent excessive cold and sometimes aesthetic purposes. However, they also serve as filters and could accumulate a lot of dirt and dust. Leaving them unattended may mean breathing in the excess dust and accumulated dirt. However, with regular cleaning, these carpets and mats will work for you and can even contribute to ensuring your home’s air quality is top-notch. Just make sure to keep them clean by washing them regularly.

Control the Humidity Levels

When your house is too humid, the chances are that it could be a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Unfortunately, these tend to lead to respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies. Find a way of reducing the excess moisture that causes discomfort. Consider using dehumidifiers to help regulate the moisture content in your living spaces. On the other hand, dry air can also lower the air quality in your home. In such cases, using humidifiers is advisable.

Bring in Plants

Pants are natural air filters that can help achieve a natural balance in your indoor air. Improve the quality of your indoor air by selecting an aesthetically pleasing plant that will filter and freshen the indoor air in your home.

Air quality improvements take a deliberate move. Choose to do something about the air quality in your home and notice the difference.
