While seemingly harmless in the general scheme of things, travelling is perhaps one of the most dangerous recreational activities a person can engage in because of pre-existing diseases or conditions and injuries and accidents. According to studies by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a considerable number of travellers get injured from recreational activities and die from accidents during travels, which is way more in total numbers when compared with traveller deaths resulting from contracted infectious diseases.
But if travelling makes your blood sing, then here are some tips that will help support your passion for exploring places, despite the risks.
Know yourself and prepare accordingly
You probably never really asked yourself whether you are fit to travel to a specific destination or not, both in terms of preparation and capabilities. However, knowing your strengths and weaknesses is a must, especially if you have particular needs related to your health, safety, and environment. Carrying a first-aid kit with even the bare essentials like an EpiPen and some medications helps, but if you have specific conditions, you’ll need a different type of preparation.
By different types, we mean having medical preparations for specific health conditions relating to travel. One good example is undergoing pre-travel checkups and knowing where the physicians are in your place of destination. For instance, if you know that you are prone to acid reflux or have gallstones, which could worsen while travelling to London, knowing where you can get an anti-reflux surgery in London or a gallstone surgery in London is a must.
Be aware of what you can and can’t eat
The notion of the proverbial saying, “You are what you eat,” is central to the goals of most personal, non-business-related trips, and for good reasons. One, it’s essential to make sure that you don’t get sick while you are off in an unfamiliar place. That said, staying healthy and safe by eating only the food that you can handle is perhaps the most straightforward way to do it. But since it is not always possible to find a place to eat healthy foods that agree with you, one thing you can do is to make sure to pack some of your own to stay safe.
Eat, pray, and enjoy the experience
Wherever you’re going, make sure to plan. The plan should include details of your food, your itinerary, and what you wish to experience to make the most out of the experience. Of course, you can go wild and immerse yourself in the culture of your destination, but make sure not to go overboard and compromise your safety. Other than that, make sure to enjoy the experience.
There is and will never be such a thing as a perfect vacation. With all the threats from climate, cross-contamination, and pollution, our ever-changing world poses many dangers. Therefore, it’s essential to be prepared to avoid unnecessary suffering when you travel.
