Travelling Light: How To Fly Abroad With Just Carry-on Luggage

Packing for any trip is tough, particularly when you don’t know exactly what to take and want to pack everything you own, just in case.

However, with airlines increasingly charging sky-high fees for checked baggage, you should consider taking just a carry-on bag so that you can have more money to spend having fun during your trip!

It might not be possible for you to take only carry-on baggage if you’re going on a big trip, or taking children, but for shorter vacations you can easily have a great time whilst taking only a small bag on the plane. This will save you money and time, as you won’t have to collect your suitcase when you get off the plane, meaning you’ll have more of your holiday to spend having fun and immersing yourself in a new culture. Before you go, find a place to stow your bags as soon as you land in case you can’t check into your hotel just yet. You can just do a Google search for something like “where to store my bags in Los Angeles“, for example.

Here are our top tips on how you can pack everything you need into a bag large enough for you to take on the plane.

Find Out How Much Carry-on Luggage You’re Allowed

Research the baggage allowance that your airline provides as standard with your ticket, and if necessary, look into upgrading it. Some airlines give you very little carry-on luggage allowance, so you’ll need to pay to get extra if you want to take everything you need with you on the plane.

Learn The Rules At Your Destination

Some countries have restrictions about bringing in certain items, like prescription drugs, so make sure you check before you fly and are prepared for when you reach your destination. Go to the government website for the country you’re visiting and there should be guidelines that will allow you to see if you have any contraband before you travel.

Take Classic Accessories That’ll Go With Everything

Find some classic closet staples, like a sophisticated Saint Laurent bag that you can wear with any outfit, saving you space in your carry-on luggage. Have a look at the range from SSENSE to find the perfect accessory to take with you on your adventure.

Put Things In Your Pockets

While your carry-on bag has to be a certain size, most airlines do not restrict passenger weight, so you can wear a big coat with lots of pockets and then load them up with small items. This will free up space in your bag and mean that you have lots of things on hand to amuse yourself with throughout the flight.

Avoid Taking Anything Sharp

Carrying sharp objects like knives, scissors and needles is forbidden on most airlines for the safety of crew and passengers, so make sure you remove anything sharp from your bag before you start packing for your trip. Anything you need like sewing kits or nail scissors can either be purchased when you reach your destination or may even be provided at your accommodation.

Buy A Tablet Computer To Save Space

Carrying lots of electrical equipment with you on a plane can be both heavy and nerve-wracking, so take less by combining everything you need into one device. Buy a tablet computer to save yourself space taking lots of gadgets. You can also load eBooks onto the tablet, so you don’t have to carry lots of bulky books with you.

Only Take Essential Toiletries

Around the world there are restrictions on the liquids you can take on a plane, so pack only the toiletries and beauty products that you need. If you’re staying a hotel then they’ll probably have replacements for most of your toiletries in the room, and if you’re not then you can probably find them cheap in pharmacies. Check your toiletries and consider whether or not you need them so that you can reduce the amount of space your products take up in your bag.

Wear One Pair Of Shoes

Shoes will take up a lot of space in your bag, so find a classic pair and wear them on the flight and throughout your holiday. Make sure they’re hardwearing and comfortable so that they don’t hurt your feet. If you do feel you need another pair, buy some small, flexible shoes like flip-flops or espadrilles so that you can easily pack them in your carry-on luggage.

Pack Strategically

Using tricks like folding your clothes tightly, stuffing underwear into your shoes and fitting your clothes into every crevice of you bag will save you space and mean that you can easily find your items once you get to your destination. You can also use travel cubes to organize your items so you’re able to find everything and can save space by dividing your bag into neat sections.

At the end of the day, it’s important that you have a great time on your trip. Make great memories on your trip whilst saving yourself time and money by following these tips.
