5 Things to do in Bhutan

There are many reasons why Bhutan remains a go-to destination for countless travelers around the world. Whether it’s the striking forts and monasteries, jaw-dropping mountainous landscapes, or the prospect of a serene spiritual getaway, the Himalayan kingdom has something for everyone.

Tigers Nest, Monastery, Bhutan, One Of A Kind, Unique

But with so much to see and do, deciding on which activities to cram into the duration of your stay can be challenging. After all, you want to make the most of every day you have available. To make things easier, we’ve put together a list of 5 things to do in Bhutan for a truly unforgettable journey.

Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Also known as Taktsang Monastery, this sacred site is located on the edge of a mountain that reaches over 10,000 feet into the sky. As you make your way up the mountain, you can take a scenic tea break at the local cafeteria while taking in the lovely views. Tiger’s Nest Monastery is still fully functional today, serving as a home for local monks.

Buddha Dordenma Statue

No visit to Bhutan would be complete without a stop at Great Buddha Dordenma, a gigantic statue built to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the fourth king. The impressive structure stands 169 feet tall and contains over 100,000 smaller Buddhas, each made of bronze and covered in gold like the Buddha Dordenma itself.

The man-made spectacle is just one of the numerous attractions you’ll find in Thimphu City. Some nearby sights include the Royal Botanical Park, Tashichho Dzong, and Clock Tower Square. Given the area’s proximity to top attractions, it’s worth considering local accommodation, such as a hotel Bhutan Thimpu based, for a comfortable and convenient stay.

Tashichho-Dzong

While Tashichho may be one of several dzongs in the Thimpu area, it’s by far one of the most exciting to visit. The massive fortress compromises of numerous floors, all topped by triple-tiered golden roofs. Here you can watch the changing of the guards before heading outside to take in the tranquil landscape and colorful flower beds.

Simply Bhutan

When you start feeling peckish, there’s no better place to be than Simply Bhutan. Not only is it a great spot to taste the country’s hot and flavorful cuisine, but it’s also a “living” museum where you can try Arag, a creamy spirit unique to the area. After that, you can slip on a traditional dress, try your hand at archery, and take in the beauty of the phallic garden.

Dochula Pass

If you’re heading towards Punakha from Thimpu, then Dochula Pass is a most worthwhile stopping point. Located atop mountains that reach thousands of feet into the air is a collection of 108 shrines that overlook the valley below. There’s also a local coffee shop, botanical park and stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas.

While these 5 attractions are sure to have you leaving Bhutan wanting more, they’re far from the only things that make the country such a great travel destination. So, don’t hesitate to do some exploring and discover more of what Bhutan has to offer.
