Interdependence Public Relations is a company which is notoriously difficult to get a job in and the reason for this is that their standards are so high that they only want the very best applicants. In doing this they have forged themselves as being one of the best PR companies is in the business and it is why I wanted to catch up with some of their team members to discover what skills someone may require if they want to forge a successful career in public relations. These guys have set the bar so high that if you are able to match these skills then you may very well be destined for a career in this exciting and fast paced industry.
Here are the key skills which they guys at Interdependence PR suggested that you should have as a minimum.
Creativity
Companies and individuals hire PR companies for two reasons, the first is for their industry knowledge and the second is for the creativity which they can offer when branding or when packaging a certain message which the companies wishes to share. In terms of industry knowledge this is something which you will learn over time but creativity is something which you must have from the outset.
Organization
Being able to organize and manage your time and that of others is also an essential skill in this game. In your role working within PR you will be amazing different clients and different schedules, a series of events and also planning those events. All of this requires you to be on the ball at al times and to organize others so that they are ready to deliver when it is required.
People Skills
Public relations is a job which is almost self explanatory, relating to the public, and for this reason you need to be able to speak and get on with a wide variety of people. Whether you are chatting strategy with a CEO, working out table arrangements with a hotel manager or working with a press officer to arrange a press release, you should be able to comfortably and confidently converse with these people and get them on side. You must be likable and someone who can win the hearts and minds of those that you are working with.
Communication Skills
As well as the communication skills which you will need to speak with people from all backgrounds you will also need to know how to listen to the needs of the client in order to deliver results. As well as this you must have impeccable written communication because much of the job demands this from you.
Results
Ultimately you must be committed to delivering results for both your company and fo your clients, this comes from having a passion to succeed and the drive to work hard. Without a commitment to delivering results you will struggle to find success in this industry.
