Companies and individuals hire PR companies for two reasons, the first is for their industry knowledge and the second is for the creativity which they can offer when branding or when packaging a certain message which the companies wishes to share. In terms of industry knowledge this is something which you will learn over time but creativity is something which you must have from the outset.
Being able to organize and manage your time and that of others is also an essential skill in this game. In your role working within PR you will be amazing different clients and different schedules, a series of events and also planning those events. All of this requires you to be on the ball at al times and to organize others so that they are ready to deliver when it is required.
Public relations is a job which is almost self explanatory, relating to the public, and for this reason you need to be able to speak and get on with a wide variety of people. Whether you are chatting strategy with a CEO, working out table arrangements with a hotel manager or working with a press officer to arrange a press release, you should be able to comfortably and confidently converse with these people and get them on side. You must be likable and someone who can win the hearts and minds of those that you are working with.
As well as the communication skills which you will need to speak with people from all backgrounds you will also need to know how to listen to the needs of the client in order to deliver results. As well as this you must have impeccable written communication because much of the job demands this from you.
Ultimately you must be committed to delivering results for both your company and fo your clients, this comes from having a passion to succeed and the drive to work hard. Without a commitment to delivering results you will struggle to find success in this industry.
