How to Choose Local Suppliers for Your Business

When it comes to setting up or running a business, there are many factors to juggle and consider. One important aspect is where you source your supplies from. It’s not always easy – or cheap – to find reliable local suppliers for all the products and materials you need, but it’s definitely worth doing some research and making an effort. Wild blueberry powder in Canada is one example of a product that may be difficult to find. Here are some tips on how to choose the best local suppliers for your business

Look for Suppliers That Serve Your Industry Niche

If you’re in a niche industry – such as the food industry – then it makes sense to look for suppliers who specialize in serving that niche. The more specific the supplier is, the better they will be able to meet your needs.

For example, if you’re looking for wild blueberry powder in Canada, it makes sense to find a supplier that deals specifically with wild blueberries because they know how to process them into powder form and can do so at an affordable price point. The same goes for other niche industries such as farming equipment (tractors), food packaging materials (packaging bags), etc.

Ask Business Friends or Family Members Who They Use as Local Suppliers

When starting a business, it’s always helpful to get recommendations from people you trust. Ask your friends or family members if they know of any good local suppliers in your area. They may have personal experience working with them and can vouch for their quality and service.

Look Online

If you don’t have any luck finding supplier recommendations from people you know, the next best thing is to search online. Try searching for “local [your city/town] suppliers” or “local [your industry] suppliers” to see what comes up. You can also check out online directories such as Yelp or Google Maps that have listings for local businesses.

Attend Trade Shows

If you’re in a specific industry, there are probably trade shows that feature suppliers and service providers. For example, beauty supply distributors will often exhibit at cosmetology trade shows. Attending these trade shows is a great way to meet potential suppliers and learn more about their services in person.

Sit Down to Talk with Potential Suppliers:

It can be tempting to jump straight into choosing a supplier based on price alone, but it’s important to get to know them as well as their products first. Ask what they can offer you in terms of variety, quality and price because these factors will affect your final decision greatly. If you want to buy wild blueberry powder in Canada, for example, ask about their other flavors and if they can provide samples so you can try them out before buying any large quantities.

Choose a Supplier with a Proven Track Record with Businesses Similar to Yours

While you can’t judge a book by its cover—or in this case, a supplier by the number of listings they have—it’s important to choose a supplier that has experience meeting the needs of businesses like yours. If you need Aveda products and supplies, for instance, it wouldn’t be good to partner with a local distributor who only carries Redken.

Similarly, if you own an independent coffeehouse and want to connect with local farmers for fresh produce, consider choosing someone who has worked with other independent coffeehouses.

Evaluate the Cost-Effectiveness of Different Local Suppliers

When you’re trying to decide which supplier will be the most cost-effective, it’s important to consider more than just the price they tack on each item. You should also determine how much it costs to transport products from that supplier.

For instance, a lot of coffeehouses and restaurants like to use locally sourced products because it reduces their carbon footprint and supports local farmers. However, if your local distributor is across town and you have to drive there twice a day (or if you need multiple deliveries every day), then that might not be as cost-effective as working with a regional distributor who can deliver everything in one stop.

Regardless of which supplier you choose, just make sure that their products align with your business strategy. Don’t just pick the cheapest or the fanciest; go for the one that will bring you the most value.
