What I’m Going to Miss About Vancouver

by Nomadic Chick on February 12, 2010

The parks.

Queen Elizabeth in particular, since it’s near my abode.  I moved here last July, completely bereft to be away from English Bay, but found this gem.  Affectionately referred to as “Little Mountain”, this park wormed its way into my heart.

Tell me fellow travelers, what do you miss about your hometown?  Or maybe you haven’t left yet or thought about it, the truth is we will always miss something.

Queen Elizabeth Park

February 6, 2010. Trying to capture one of my favorite parks in Vancouver.

@Steph – Couldn’t agree more on pets, as per my loopy admission. Pets form attachments to us and dang they get mad when you leave for long periods.

@Abby – Yay to #rtwnow! I could see you bopping in your car. :) I gave up my car a while ago, so I don’t miss it, which is surprising. I drove for 20+ years. Yeesh.

I’m going to have to say, being #rtwnow I miss my car the most. I really spent some good quality “me” time cruising around (and/or sitting in LA traffic). It’s not fun being without a car and even when I do get to drive around here, it’s in a stick (*shiver*) and on the wrong side of the road – look out people, crazy American on the road.

@nomadic chick After I wrote that my cat came over and cuddled up to me and I realized I’d left that out. Pets are a really easy thing to miss since its not like you can talk to them on the phone or anything.

But they are always SO happy when you come home!

Other than friends and a paycheck, I’ll definitely miss the Southern California climate and terrain. Today it’s sunny and 80 degrees, perfect weather for riding a bike 340 days a year. With several major mountain ranges within 30 miles, it’s a dream for a cyclist.

@Catia – Have I mentioned that I adore your name? Why did your mom/dad pick that name? I’ve heard of Kensington, and plan to see it this summer!

@karenzo – I see it now, Central Park dusted with white, people walking through bundled up. Yup, that homesick feeling. So dual and weird. You feel happy to be in a new place, yet yearning for some of the old. Thanks for sharing!

@Chris – Memories from childhood (as long as it was a good one) are always tinged with gold. The best part is you’ll get to return someday.

@Steph – The consensus seems to be missing friends. This sounds nuts, I’m going to miss my cat the most. Just call me crazy, cougar cat lady. :)

I’ll miss my friends. When I am abroad it can be hard to se pictures of them having fun without me. and I tend to get a little choked up when I see images of downtown DC on tv and in movies.
But last time around I was abroad for 9 months and I actually didn’t miss things as much as I expected to. The amazing new experiences you are having, and the new people you are meeting tend to dull the ache more than you’d think.

I’m going to miss going back to see my family where I grew up. Having moved about a bit for study and work its the only constant. As I’ve written before on my blog there is nothing better than driving into town. Everything is familiar and you forget the rest of the world exists.

I miss NYC in the winter. Everyone thinks I was wise to leave for the temperate weather of Ecuador when I did earlier this month. But the seasons is one my favorite things about the city, along with Central Park in the snow. It snowed a few feet in New York earlier this week and seeing my friends’ photos succeeded in actually making me feel homesick, even though I am loving it here in Quito.

It looks beautiful there!

I miss some of my friends and the convenience of my old neighbourhood, I lived in Kensington Market, Toronto. It’s a very vibrant, artistic area and everything I could possibly need was within walking distance… Well, everything but the adventures of wandering the world.

I do miss it already at times, but I wouldn’t trade this new life for the conveniences yet. :)
