Travel Mission

by Nomadic Chick on April 2, 2010

Every traveler embarks on a trip with certain intentions.  The fitting answer “I just want to get away” is not where I’m at.  Here are a few of my ideas:

#1  How: plane, train, bus, bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, freighter, speedboat, tall ship, walking, running, rollerskating (seriously, I have them!), hiking.

#2  Learn new languages.

#3  Live out of one bag for 6 months straight.

#4  Stay in shape.  Have you ever seen a backpacker wheezing for dear life?

#5  Meet ordinary women in every country I visit and feature them on this site.

#6  Not rushing.  Traveling slow and steady to absorb all my surroundings.

#7  Throwing away the guidebook and seeing what happens.

#8  Use a camera as my eye.  I have a nasty habit of experiencing a moment instead of capturing it.

#9  Celebrating Christmas or New Year’s in Taiwan, Spain, or Malaysia.

#10  Utilizing my talents to give back to others by volunteering overseas.

#11  Eat cuisine from a food stall, not just a Lonely Planet certified restaurant.

#12  Learn something useful.

#13  Trying a sport I’d never attempt at home.  Skydiving anyone?

#14  Watching the sunset at Machu Picchu, the Egyptian Pyramids, and the Taj Mahal.

#15  View each travel day as a fresh slate, where the common or the spectacular might appear.

Happy trails, everyone!

@Cornelius – Oh monkey, let’s hope that never happens. :)

I’m always afraid that after long term traveling that I’ll forget to do #15 that the extraordinary becomes ordinary, scary thought. If that ever happens to you read your cubical series.

@Aye – I hope so. I like that idea as well. That one sprang from a thirst. What do other women in the world dream about?

@Catia – LOL. Fair enough. Perhaps I should revise the wheezing part. I’ll be doing lots of that.

@Shannon – Oh, we’ll see on the skydiving. Many items on the bucket list – and parallel lists at once! Wasn’t I supposed to pare things down? Yikes!

Looking forward to reading about how you accomplish each of these! Sky diving has been on my list now for awhile but I haven’t gotten up the gumption yet! :-)

Great list! I do have one thing to say though to “Have you ever seen a backpacker wheezing for dear life?”… that’s just because you’ve never seen me in person climbing 150ish very steep stairs to a hostel with my bag on my back, trust me it wasn’t pretty. The first few times up those stairs I was beyond wheezing and well into the gasping for breath stage. :p

Awesome list.. May all your travel missions come alive for you! :-) you can definitely find a lot of food stalls in Asia. I like the “meet ordinary women in each country visited idea”
