My Summer Plans: A Bull and Spain

by Jeannie on May 1, 2012

What would an earthquake feel like?  You stand on solid ground, a tremor travels from a few feet away until finally it’s throbbing beneath you.  The earth could split open under you, reveal her secrets or send you flying into a whole new stratosphere.

That’s the only way I can describe my upcoming summer adventure:

You heard the rumblings in the past while, a hint here or there.  Confirmed.  I am participating in San Fermin.  If I must sprint alongside six charging bulls –  Oneika, Nicole B., Lois and Nicole S. are worthy partners to do this with me.

On that note, I happily unveil Girls Running With Bulls!

Introduction post: Welcome to Girls Running With Bulls.

I’m thrilled about this on so many levels.  For the thrumming excitement, spectacle and the sheer experience.

Read Michael Hodson’s account to gain some perspective on this popularized fiesta.

I hope you follow along, because it’s going to be quite the ride!

How did I miss your social media post calling for women volunteers to run with the bulls of Pamplona!!!
I’ve secretly wanted to do it for so long… I can’t believe there are other women who would be willing to run. I’m so proud of y’all. Woohoo!!!! I spent part of my childhood in Spain and studied abroad there, and have watched el corredo de toros on TV many times. So, SO HAPPY that you ladies are doing this! Only wish I’d known about it.

Buena suerte a todas.

cheers,
~Kelly

Are you crazy? Do you want to die?!!!! Haha! Oh Jeannie, you make me laugh. In all seriousness, I can see the controversy in this, but I think you explained yourself very well in wanting to be an observer. Nobody should be judging your choices as you wouldn’t be judging theirs. I’ll be cheering all of you ladies on! — Michelle

Rachel May 1, 2012 at 5:45 pm

I’ll be really interested in reading about it! I feel like participant observation is a great way to learn more about culture – and what a controversial event is really like. Can we really judge the running of the bulls if we haven’t done it? I don’t know. I like the idea of this project!

I agree with Margyle up there. As someone who has been chased by a few cows in my day, I would never VOLUNTARILY agree to be chased by multiple cows — especially big angry male ones. But best of luck & can’t wait to read all about it!

Woohoo go girls! :D Glad to see Lois and Nicole on the list. Will be looking forward to your adventures and yep, I miss you Jeannie! :D

Margyle May 1, 2012 at 8:00 am

As someone who has been chased by dehorned cows, not bulls with horns, I would have to say no to this experience for myself lol. That being said, being a part of the festivities sounds like an incredible opportunity – best of luck!
